Why do Birds have Feathers?

Feathers help to keep birds warm and enable them to fly. Their wings are equipped with stiff flight feathers to provide both lift and, when the wings are flapped, forward thrust to propel these masters of flight through the air. Something else common to all birds is that they lay eggs with hard shells.
